Another tidbit about the drama business during Kombur days. The drama would sometimes take place in the school building courtyard, which was covered with a thatched roof with wooden cross-beams. One day, someone had the bright idea to hang a petromax lamp from one of the beams in order to light up the stage. As you might expect, the lamp which is nothing other than a high-pressure kerosine gas flame, heated up the wood beam and after a while, the whole thing caught fire. Fortunately, someone spotted the flame immediately and raised the alarm – and the fire was doused with water before it burned down the entire building and all the people within. It was a close call. For many years afterwards, if you went to the school building, you could still see the soot-covered burnt beam. For all I know, if the building still stands today, the burn marks will still be visible there.
